Further Reading on the Trout Family

My research of the Trout family prior to John Henry Trout of Frederick County, Maryland, is as yet incomplete. Therefore it is with a grain of salt that I recommend the following sources. I have checked them out, but not in depth:
  • An extensive DNA project on all American Trout lines has been in the works for several years. The hyperlink will take you to a description of the various lines that have been tested so far. Interestingly, the line that I believe is mine (Line #15 - Hans Martin Trout) has been shown to be genetically distinct from all other Trout lines tested. I have been in contact with Craig Trout, the project's group administrator. He advocates the use of my next source for research, below.
  • The book 250 Year History of My Trout Family by George E. Trout was published in 1991 and traces this particular line back to Impflingen, Germany. As I mentioned, I haven't been able to look at it in depth to determine the quality of the research, but if the information proves to be solid, it's a gold mine. At the very least, it is an interesting starting point for getting my Trout ancestors back across the Atlantic to their native Germany. The book is not widely available--I've had to use WorldCat to locate a copy and then obtain it through interlibrary loan. There is a snippet view on GoogleBooks online.
  • GoogleBooks has a free, online copy of the History of Frederick County, Maryland by Thomas John Chew Williams and Folger McKinsey. With a convenient key-word search and an index, I was able to locate a biographical section on John Henry Trout and his family, including a decently large section on Charles H. Trout, David H. Trout's younger brother who remained in Frederick County. David is mentioned as one of the children of John Trout and Catherine Dorcas.
